In 2023, a consortium led by the Wowhaus bureau won the competition for the concepts of the Social and Cultural Center in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The future center will combine an event space for local residents, an expo-attraction for tourists ‘The Heart of Kamchatka’ and a city living room - a new format for discussing the life of the city.
Objective:
To design a space able to evoke the urban life.
Solution:
The appearance of the building and the organization of its spaces are determined by the internal structure, which is based on the specific needs of the city and its people.
The cultural center will be built in the central part of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky at the foot of Nikolskaya Sopka. From the windows of the center, a view of Lake Kultuchnoe, the main city square and Avachinsky Bay will open.
The image of the building embodies the social idea of the center and the natural features of Kamchatka, its volcanoes and complex terrain. The building is adapted to the climatic features of the region: it is earthquake-resistant, protected from wind and snow. It is planned to use local natural materials in exterior and interior decoration.
The social and cultural center is designed for 543,130 people per year and will consist of three functional blocks: an event zone, a city lounge and the Heart of Kamchatka experience center.
The event space is intended for local residents, it is a place for communication and self-development. Various events, public performances, lectures, movie shows will be held there.
The city living room is designed for both local residents and guests of the city. It is a permanent space for solving urban issues, for open communication, including one with government officials and the business community. The center provides space for additional commercial use - a cafe, a restaurant overlooking Avachinsky Bay, a bookstore and products of local creative industries, allowing the center to develop sustainably.
The ‘Heart of Kamchatka’ experience center is a tourist attraction. It will combine two expositions – ‘The Origin of Life’, which explains the structure of the world from the modern science’s point of view, and ‘Creation of the World’, based on the mythology of the indigenous peoples of Kamchatka. At the end, visitors will be able to get into the ‘heart of the volcano’ - a multimedia installation that plays a key role in both routes.
